Old Place, Knysna - One of our town's most misunderstood suburbs

OLD PLACE, KNYSNA – ONE OF THE TOWN'S MOST MISUNDERSTOOD SUBURBS

Old Place is often described as an affordable part of Knysna, which is true. What is often missed is why so many residents choose to stay there for years and why buyers continue to see value in the area.

Having lived in Upper Old Place for the past 5 years, I have come to appreciate the many advantages that are often overlooked. In fact, both of my immediate neighbours have lived here for more than 40 years each. That alone says something about the suburb's appeal and the quality of life many residents experience.

Yes, property prices are generally lower than some of Knysna's more fashionable suburbs, but affordability is only part of the story. Old Place offers larger stands, established homes, mature gardens, and in Upper Old Place, some truly spectacular views across the lagoon and through to the Knysna Heads.

What many buyers only discover after moving in is the convenience of living on this side of town. Leisure Isle, The Heads, the lagoon, sports fields, George Rex Drive, and many of Knysna's outdoor lifestyle attractions are all easily accessible without constantly having to travel through the town centre.

The area is also well served by local businesses and gathering spots. Residents enjoy easy access to Bosun's, Blend, local bakeries, pubs, restaurants, convenience stores, and the surrounding commercial and light industrial area that supports many local businesses. There is often more happening on this side of town than many people realise.

Many of Knysna's long-term residents have chosen Old Place precisely because it remains practical, accessible and unpretentious. It is a suburb where people tend to live their lives rather than chase appearances.

Like many established South African suburbs, Old Place borders areas where people have moved in search of employment opportunities. This has created perceptions about the suburb that are not always matched by reality.

While residents remain mindful of security, as they do throughout Knysna, the area continues to attract families, retirees, working professionals, and long-term homeowners who value practicality, convenience, and lifestyle over prestige. The neighbourhood watch initiative, currently being strengthened, is another positive step in maintaining and improving community safety.

Perhaps that is Old Place's greatest strength. It is not trying to be something it isn't. It offers honest value, excellent accessibility, larger properties than many newer developments, and a lifestyle that works remarkably well for people who enjoy everything that the lagoon side of Knysna has to offer.

Sometimes the best places to live are not the ones that shout the loudest.

Selling a property is not something people do often. Most homeowners do not fear selling. They fear getting it wrong. Without structure… uncertainty grows.
